OUR town’s thriving sports scene was showcased when competitors aged from seven to 70 joined in the St Helens Sports Festival.

Sixteen hours of activities took place over the weekend at Ruskin Drive sportsground, with 150 teams taking part in 400 games.

Saturday and Sunday escaped with just one hour of rain showers, though Friday’s schools event had to be cancelled in advance due to poor ground and weather conditions.

Sports over the two days included bowls, rugby league, rugby union, tennis and football.

The festival, organised by St Helens Council’s sports development team, was recognised by the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games as part of the Inspire programme celebrating the London 2012 Olympics.

Fifty volunteers organised and refereed events.
