TWO retailers sold butane gas lighter refills to a 15-year-old girl in a sting carried out by St Helens Trading Standards.

The young volunteer was part of a test purchase run at 10 local stores by officers aiming to cut the risk of volatile solvent abuse.

Although it is illegal to supply lighter refills to anyone under 18, some youngsters are known to inhale the fumes, with potentially lethal results.

Councillor Richard McCauley, cabinet member for environmental protection said: “Around 75 people still die each year due to volatile substance abuse.

“So it’s vital that all retailers fulfil their responsibilities and do not sell such products to anyone under 18.”

Investigations into the sales are ongoing.

The Cigarette Lighter Refill (Safety) Regulations make it an offence for a retailer to supply refills to anyone under 18, facing fines of up to £5,000 and six months imprisonment.
