Kids muck in at veg plot

IN a break from their computers and classrooms, a group of children got their hands dirty down at the allotments to learn more about eating healthily.

Ashtons Green Allotments in Parr invited the children to test their knowledge of fruit and veg, just by giving it a sniff.

People at the allotments pride themselves on being a focal point for the community.

Treasurer Reg Massey said the idea was to get the children used to food before it is processed and packaged.

He said: “Instead of the children going into school and on their computers they come here, and not only do they pick up the knowledge, they take it home.

“This is all good to let people know what we do down here.”

Reg said they hold a series of community events throughout the year, from sowing spuds to Hallowe’en displays.
