FIREFIGHTERS have been working through the night to tackle a blaze at a recycling plant.
Crews were called to Central Grange Environmental Recycling, in Merton Street shortly before noon on Sunday.
They discovered waste materials and part of an asbestos roof ablaze.
At its height, six fire engines were at the scene and during the early hours of Monday morning mechanical diggers were used to move 400 tonnes of waste to prevent the flames spreading.
Damping down operations continued inside the single storey waste unit until after 4am and two hoses were still being used at 7am this morning.
Crews from across Merseyside were brought in to deal with the blaze. Merton Bank Road was closed by Merseyside Police during part of Sunday.
