BUS firm Arriva has ruled out making widespread alterations to its revamped network, although minor changes are being made to several routes.

The Star has received dozens of complaints from frustrated passengers since the changes were made to the routes at the end of July.

They are angry that revised routes mean they can no longer catch a bus to shops, doctors or workplaces in some areas of the town.

But Arriva spokesperson Derek Bowes said: "We remain of the firm view that the service changes in St Helens have made a big improvement for the majority of customers.

"We undertook from the outset to listen to and address any issues arising, and while there is no question of reverting back to the former services, we have agreed to make some minor changes."

Following demonstrations by neighbours, who double-parked cars on Walkers Lane to demonstrate the tightness of the road, the company has agreed to reduce the number of buses along from eight per hour to four.

This means the 33A Widnes service will travel along Jubits Lane from October 23. Mr Bowes added: "We believe the real cause for complaint (at Walkers Lane) is its use by general traffic, including large commercial vehicles, as a short cut.

"Following discussions with St Helens Council, we will be serving Walkers Lane in one direction only, which will reduce the conflicting vehicle movements and improve safety along the section of route."

Meanwhile, smaller buses are set to be used on the 31A service in Eccleston and a bus stop relocated in Chapel Lane. Arriva hopes this will solve "problems of buses idling in Broadway".

A service has also to be restored to Dunriding Lane, by diverting the 10C (St Helens to Prescot route). It has been renumbered the 39.

Meanwhile, Arriva says it will continue to monitor routes as traffic on the roads increase following the end of the school holidays.
