POLICE are investigating after banners containing racist slogans were twice hung from a motorway bridge this week.

Officers received reports at 5pm on Thursday, June 9 and 1pm today (Friday, June 10) that a racist banner had been hung from the M62 footbridge, known locally as the 'sausage bridge', at Huyton off Old Dover Road.

On both occasions officers immediately removed the banners for examination.

House-to-house enquiries are underway and CCTV is being examined from the area.

Chief Inspector Kevin Wellens, said: "This type of behaviour is totally unacceptable and the people who have done this should be left in no doubt that their behaviour will not be tolerated and robust action will be taken to ensure they are arrested and prosecuted for their actions.

"We take racial abuse very seriously and have dedicated units to investigate such crimes in Merseyside."

"We are appealing to members of the public who may have seen anyone acting suspiciously around the bridge in the last few days to come forward so we can take action against the offenders."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Merseyside Police on 0151 709 6010 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
