FIRE crews tackled a blaze at Saints' former Knowsley Road home last night.

Emergency crews were called out at about 11.30pm on Thursday after flames spread in a ground floor corridor of the ground.

A section of the stadium, Saints' home of 120 years, was damaged by smoke.

Police were also called and a joint investigation is underway. The cause of the blaze has yet to be confirmed.

A Merseyside Police spokesman said: "We were called by the fire service to reports of a large fire at the stadium on Dunriding Lane.

"Fire crews attended and put out the fire, which appears to have started in a corridor, near to where there was a lot of rubbish.

"A joint investigation is underway and we intend on going back there today to inspect the site.

"The fire service has secured the ground. We don't know at this stage whether it is suspicious or if something else has happened."

The stadium has been unoccupied since late December and will be demolished by developers later this year.

Taylor Wimpey is planning to build houses on the site.
