AMID a blanket of frost and ice, excited baboons chomped on their favourite treat – hot baked potatoes.
The big freeze has forced Knowsley Safari Park to close but staff are making sure all the animals are kept warm indoors.
General manager, David Ross, said: “Baboons go mad for these hot baked potatoes.
“It’s their special winter food ration once a day and they love them.
“Animals behave like children in the snow.
“The lions come flying out and charge around, enjoying themselves, and then, when the ice gets into their paws, they suddenly realise ‘ouch, what’s that?’ and dash back in.
“We’re being extra vigilant, making sure everyone has plenty of bedding and food and their houses are as warm as possible.”
A baby rhino was born last week and two more are due at any moment.
David, added: “It’s surprising how hardy the animals are.
“Most of them were born here so they’re getting used to our wintry weather.”
If the ice thaws, he hopes to reopen the park today (Thursday).
