A COWBOY from Texas and a boy from Singapore are among the latest fans of a revived St Helens delicacy.

Ex-pats from across the world have been turning up in the town to taste their favourite treats.

The fame of the new look Pimmies Pies has spread by Twitter, telephone, Facebook and word of mouth.

After the 87-year-old family firm Pimbletts crumbled in December, 2008, two former bakers teamed up with two local businessmen last year, to restore the famous recipes.

Marg and Tony Sharratt, who sell their pies, have been overwhelmed with overseas customers.

Marg, of AM Fine Foods in Jackson Street, said: “We’ve had people from Australia and an Irish guy comes in every weekend.

“They bake the pies across the road. We get them fresh every 20 minutes.

“Everything is handmade, they’ve gone back to the old recipes.

“People say they are more like they were 20 years ago.

“We even take them out to old ladies who can’t get here.

They were born and brought up with the pies.”

Bakers Clive Matthews and Tony Myers joined Arthur Bevan, a local meat supplier, to supply cafes and shops throughout the town with scrumptious peppery pies.

Meat and potato is still the most popular.

Blackcurrant, apple and custard fillings, hot pots and scones are also selling like hot cakes.

Tony Sharratt, who was born in Fingerpost and lives in Dentons Green, said: “We had a wonderful encounter with a chap who had come all the way from Austin, Texas and couldn’t wait to get his teeth into his local childhood delicacy.

“He’d lived over there for 40 years and announced after eating two pies there and then, in a strong Texan accent: ‘The real deal!’ and he even had the cowboy boots on too.

“We’ve had people in from as far as South Africa, Majorca and last week we had a lovely father and son, straight off the plane, who live in Singapore.”

Nick, an 11-year-old Singapore boy, was visiting his grandparents who both live in St Helens.

Excited pie lovers are now waiting for Pimmies sausage rolls and vanilla slices to be revived as the newly restored bakery celebrates its first birthday.
