COUNCIL chiefs say they are "very disappointed" at the Planning Inspectorate’s decision to allow a three year extension to the Lyme Pit landfill site in Haydock.
Earlier this year, St Helens Council turned down a planning application from Cory Environmental that sought permission to extend the life of the Vista Road site for a further three years.
Neighbours also mounted strong opposition to the plans and St Helens North MP Dave Watts spoke out about the "unacceptable levels of dust, smell, rats and flies" residents have faced over the past six years.
However, Cory appealed the decision and it went to a recent public inquiry.
On Friday the Planning Inspectorate upheld the appeal.
In a statement Councillor Suzanne Knight, deputy leader of St Helens Council, said: “Obviously we are extremely disappointed at this decision.
"The Council has done all it can to support residents in the area and turned the application down due to its unacceptable impact upon the environment, character of the area and impact on local residents.
"This is a further three years local residents will have to suffer the disruption this site has caused to their lives.”
