MOTORISTS will be able to use several St Helens car parks for free on Saturday as the council aims to attract more Christmas shoppers to the town centre.
Starting this Saturday, November 28, there will be no charges on five town centre car parks.
It is part the 'Be Local, Buy Local local' campaign which is encouraging people to use St Helens shops, businesses and services to help retain jobs.
Since the high profile launch around 150 local shops and businesses have signed up to the campaign.
The free parking scheme will run on the four Saturdays before Christmas.
In a statement, Lib Dem council leader, Cllr Brian Spencer, said: "We hope people will support this initiative and shop in the town centre.
“Free car parking and an exciting programme of Christmas events highlight that St Helens town centre has a lot to offer both local residents and shoppers across the region.
“With easy transport routes plus free parking, it really does give the town that added attraction to shoppers and visitors."
Chalon Way, Tontine, St Mary’s, Hardshaw and Birchley Street car parks are involved. On street parking will still be chargeable however.
Local retailers from Trilogy Jewellery, Carl Christopher, OD's and Tyrers helped to launch the free parking scheme as part of the 'Be local, buy local' campaign.
