Mayoral salute for Kirsty's cancer campaign

AFTER smashing their target of 10,000 signatures calling for the cervical cancer screening age to be lowered, the dedicated family of Kirsty Winstanley celebrated with a trip to the mayor’s parlour.

The family of the brave 23-year-old, who lost her battle against cervical cancer in August, have taken up her fight to have the age at which women are tested lowered from 25 to 20.

They needed to reach the 10,000 mark before being able to present the petition to the Prime Minister at Downing Street, which they intend to do in January.

Touched by their determination, the Mayor and Mayoress of St Helens, Terry and Julie Shields invited Kirsty’s family, including her five-year-old son, Aidan, to the parlour on Monday evening.

It was also a chance to present Aidan with money raised for a trust fund, by the team at Lily’s Tea Rooms and Caffe Nero in St Helens.

Linda Carroll who runs the popular café on Hall Street, helped organise a charity walk from Liverpool to St Helens.

Staff and customers helped raise £1,805.

With money still to come in, they are also due to hand over a cheque to Willowbrook Hospice.

And over at Caffe Nero, they reached a total of £680.

Speaking about their VIP trip to St Helens Town Hall, where they were given a mayoral guided tour, Linda said: “The mayor and mayoress were made Aidan feel very special.

“The mayor gave us a very interesting talk.”
