A £10,000 lottery award will keep the Citadel’s Sing Out Choir belting out hits in perfect harmony.
The group, which currently has around 40 members and performed at the launch of The Dream and St Helens Festival, was set up by the Citadel and St Helens Council as part of the 2008 Capital of Culture celebrations.
It says the funding means it can now plan community performances for the rest of the year and work on a special commission to celebrate the Citadel’s 21st birthday in autumn.
The Mayor of St Helens, Councillor Terry Shields, presented the choir with a cheque last week.
Gareth Owens, who has long been involved with community music groups in the town, leads the group, which meets every Wednesday at the Citadel from 6.30pm to 8.30pm.
He said: “The group is very friendly and welcoming and we are currently looking for up to 20 new members to join in and no previous experience of singing is necessary.”
