Fans stage march for Saints stadium

8:30pm Saturday 17th May 2008

HUNDREDS of Saints supporters marched from St Helens town centre to Knowsley Road on Saturday afternoon to demonstrate backing for the rugby league club's proposed new stadium.

The army of fans gathered outside St Helens Town Hall on Victoria Square shortly before 4pm and then staged the show of support by trooping up to Knowsley Road.

Many youngsters and their parents were among the crowds calling for the stadium planning application to be approved at local level by councillors on Tuesday evening (May 20).

During the peaceful march along Corporation Street, Duke Street, Boundary Road, Knowsley Road and Dunriding Lane - which was directed by mounted police - dozens of fans carried placards and banners.

Some displayed messages such as 'Super stadium for Super Saints' and 'MPs and councillors we want our new stadium now'.

Others were critical of supermarket chain Morrisons, which is objecting to plans for a Tesco Extra to be built alongside a £25m stadium at the former United Glass site, at Peasley Cross.

Joining the marchers were Saints chairman Eamonn McManus, chief executive Tony Colquitt, St Helens North MP Dave Watts, St Helens Council leader Brian Spencer and a contingent of councillors.

The event, organised by Saints fans group Supporters Backing the Stadium (SBS), was staged prior to the match against Catalans Dragons, which Saints won 28-10.

Before the game supporters in the main stand held aloft cards that spelled out 'Vote yes', a message to councillors ahead of Tuesday's planning committee meeting.

Mr Flintstone should keep his comments to himself & should of chosen his words very carefully towards sports fans, & I do hope that St Helens do get their long waited new stadium which I would like to visit when the football season is over even though I'm not a rugby fan I do think that Saints do deserve a new stadium, even though I like football instead, but I think Mr Flintstone was well out of order for what he said to all sport fans & he should say sorry for what he said to the Saints fans. Mr Flintstone you should not go & say things like that to sport fans & you should say sorry.

Saints RLFC is a business. Like any other business, if it wants bigger premises or a change of location, it should pay for this it's self. The fact that it has gone cap in hand to Tescos means that it is now dancing with the devil .Don't you people see, , once Tesco has dominance in an area, prices will rocket even further.

If you look carefully you will see that the comment about sports fans suggesting that they die was not made by me, it is some saddo who realises that people see what they want to see and hoping I will get the blame for their comment.

I was at the match yesterday - and there is no doubt that we need a new stadium, and the response from the fans was superb. If the plans go through, then that is better than the alternative. However, I still hold to my original view that the stadium should not be dependent on Tesco bullying their way to another another megastore.

Dancing with the Devil started When the clubs sold out to join the Super league, Sky Television now rule's the game both on and off the pitch, the power of the referee to make a decision on what he see's has been overruled by slow motion replays and a video referee, I am not a rugby fan but I think this was the start of the decline of the game, get rid of the video ref and let the man with the whistle on the pitch run the match.

I see from the plans that there is NO provision for parking for any one but the disabled and the overlords of this club. What about the visiting fans ? Are they really all going to come by coach or train ( think Sunday evening train service between St Helens and Huddersfield for example ).
The Tesco car park with a thousand spaces is to be strictly policed by them to keep out non shoppers. This isn't a new ground, it's just a Tescos with a small stadium nailed on the side.
