Morrisons defend objection to stadium project

A SUPERMARKET chain has defended its decision to lodge an objection to retail plans that are integral to Saints' stadium dream.

Morrisons believes Tesco's aim to relocate from Chalon Way and build a large store alongside a new stadium at the former United Glass works in Peasley Cross should be rejected on planning grounds.

But the stadium developers have hit back with a robust defence of the proposals, insisting it will spark huge benefits to St Helens town centre.

Criticism of Morrisons' - which has stores at Boundary Road and Baxters Lane in St Helens - has been evident in letters to The Star and among Saints fans on internet messageboards.

Now Morrisons Main Board Property Director, Roger Owen says the company is "very disappointed to learn of the proposed boycott of our stores by Saints' fans" because of its objection.

Mr Owen, whose family has St Helens roots, says the opposition is "based purely on planning grounds" and certainly not "anti-rugby league sentiment".

He said: "Saints is still the first rugby league result I look for. I know that many of my colleagues, including our chairman, are extremely keen rugby league fans.

"None of that excuses the fact that all planning applications must be dealt with on their merits and within the parameters of planning law and planning guidance."

Mr Owen claims the application for the Tesco store is for a non-retail designated site and should be refused for that reason.

He added: "Setting aside all emotion and civic pride, the application should be judged on this factor and this alone. As such there can be no other outcome than to refuse it and these are the points upon which we have made in our objection. I also understand that other retailers are objecting.

"There are rules to all games and the rules must be abided by. There have been many instances where Morrisons have adhered to these same rules, but that is exactly what they are and they must be abided by and that is why we have objected."

However, John Downes, managing director of Langtree, the United Glass site's developers, said the plans would boost the town centre and allow a high quality shopping development to replace the current Tesco at Chalon Way.

He said: "This package of development schemes will change the face of retailing in the town centre to allow it to compete with Wigan and Warrington.

"Regeneration schemes such as this are wholly supported by Government Guidance and are in line with the St Helens Local Development Framework."

No date has been set for the planning application to go before St Helens Council and sources close to the plans say now they will not be heard in March.

ING real estate - the owners of Church Square shopping centre, in St Helens town centre, is also opposing the developments.

I for one will be bnoycotting Mori$$ons.

If they were so confident that they were better than other spuermarkets they would not be objecting

The stadium should be put before anything to do with supermarkets, they have loads of money and who cares where you buy your shopping from, it's not a big problem to just shop elsewhere. I also agree with the statement that moving Tesco from the town centre will allow for more diverse retail in the town centre...what could be bad about that?

As many have mentioned, morrisons do not have st helens best interests at heart. Profit margins is all that matters to them, no interest in regenerating st helens at all.

I won't be boycotting Morrisons.They have every right under the law to object to the plans, the law is there for a perfectly good reason.I'd suggest the many people who work at Morrisons and their families would not share the view that they do nothing for St Helens .And I have no idea where Mr Donaldson gets his information from about Tescos having to move even if the stadium plans were not forthcoming.Saints fans have attempted to bully virtually everyone they feel, rightly or wrongly, is getting in the way of their stadium.Even without Morrisons there are many pitfalls to the idea.

Its been nearly 5 years since i went to a game to watch my beloved Saint Helens. I pay 34.00 a motn for my sky telebox and i always try and get my moneys worth by watching the saints on television at every chance i get. There is not a better seat in the ground ! As another person has posted i do my shopping at Netto, you may not find your big name brands but you will always have some change left over to treat yourself to some cans while watching the might saints on my telebox !

Morrisons can do without my money from now on. Sure the good employees of the store benefit from the work but if there is a demand for supermarkets I am sure another would serve the need and employ people AND Morrisons don't employ people as a charity they make more money out of each employee than they pay. (it's probably a good deal less than 10% when we take into account the people who travel from outside St Helens to watch the team). I don't appreciate comments about 'gypos',scousers (and no i'm not a scouse or a gypsy) nor the way Saints fans tend to turn on anyone they think may or may not be hampering the stadium plans.

This year rather than freeze my gonads off at Odslum and the likes, and not dare take a leak at KR incase i catch something or stand in something, i have decided to save my hard earned for a nice trip to that there london or Old Trafford. For many years now i have thrown good money to watch a class team play in a crap stadium. This year rather than freeze my gonads off at Odslum and the likes, and not dare take a leak at KR incase i catch something or stand in something, i have decided to save my hard earned for a nice trip to that there london or Old Trafford. Whilst i am saving i NEED Morrisons for my cheap ale whilst watching the game on sky sports. So i won't be boycotting Morrisons.

I spend around £100-£120 a week at morrisons on shopping and around £75-£100 on petrol for my taxi.
I can tell you that i will not be spending my hard earned cash at any morrisons supermarkets. so it looks like tescos will be beter of by around £11440 a year from just me?

Therefore, if morrisons and others can't cope with the extra competition that the development would bring, well its god help them once they ply their trade outside this one horse town. ps can anyone tell me are the rumours true that St Helens intends to change its partner town from Stutgart to Basra?

The Planning permission being sought,is in three sections. 1/ The sale of Knowsley Rd to a Builder for homes.Which is the nearest Supermarket ? Morrisons 2/ Tesco to leave their present site and for this site then too be developed for non-food retail.So no threat to the Morrisons store. 3/ Re-Develope the site formly United Glass,to consist a Stadia for Sports,and the re-location of the Tesco Supermarket- the present one must rank as the worst site on their books,look how Safeways struggled.I thought Competion was the lifeblood of Retail.Finally if this council fails to deliver this planning application,and after Viccy & Queens Park,i doubt it,Then it,s goodbye Mr Chairman,would you put £250,00 of your own money into a failing Business,and according to the last A.G.M.is the cost to keep Knowsley Rd open.
