MERSEYSIDE Police asks for people to notify them, especially about scrambler bikes being used on a public highway.
I did so a couple of weeks ago and was advised that there is nothing that can be done as the police cannot chase the culprits if they are not wearing crash helmets.
I have also recently asked St Helens Council if covert CCTV could be introduced to catch illegal fly-tipping offenders at a local hotspot.
The council’s reply was apparently not, as “the use of covert cameras in these circumstances is prohibited in general terms, their presence must be notified to render the subsequent surveillance non-covert.”
So as a law-abiding community we have no rights to protection from common criminals, who it seems have immunity from detection and prosecution.
As far as I am concerned, and I suspect 99.9 per cent of the population, criminals have no rights, or have I got things wrong?
