A 17-YEAR-OLD boy who was arrested on Monday night after a man was taken to hospital with puncture wounds to his torso is still being questioned by police.

A 54-year-old man is in a serious condition in hospital after suffering puncture wounds to his torso in an attack last night (Monday, July 16).

Police were called to the Alder Street area in Newton-le-Willows shortly before 11.30pm following an altercation.

A 54-year-old man sustained puncture wounds to his torso and was taken to hospital for treatment where police say his condition is described as "serious but not life-threatening".

A 17-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of a Section 18 assault.

He was taken to hospital to be treated for lacerations to the head and a facial injury.

Police have confirmed that a custody extension has been granted for officers to continue questioning the teenager.

Residents reported seeing a police cordon put in place around the area on Monday night and officers remain in the area to conduct enquiries.

CCTV opportunities are being explored and house to house enquiries are being carried out.
