A FAMILY friend took part in a 100km bike ride on Saturday in memory of a three-year-old who died after being given a drug overdose following a seizure.

Jake Stanley, of Windle Hall Drive, Windlehurst, died in January 2017 after he was given a drug overdose at Whiston Hospital.

After his death, his mum and dad Anne-Marie and Ian Stanley, along with his four siblings received support from Child Bereavement UK, which they said helped them get through that ‘terrible time’.

To thank the charity, Anne-Marie’s colleague Sarah Foster, from West Derby in Liverpool took on the challenge.

She undertook the Liverpool Nightrider, a 100km bike ride around the Wirral and Liverpool loop on Saturday, July 14 - raising £845 so far.

Jake’s parents Anne-Marie and Ian, said: “What happened to us could really happen to anyone, it wasn’t expected at all. We are honoured that Sarah did this in memory of Jake, it’s like giving him a legacy to help others.”

“When he died, Child Bereavement UK looked after him and that time really helped us come to terms with what had happened and gave us time together.

“Sarah did really brilliant and we were there to wave her off. Jake would have been really proud of her and that he is now going on to help others.”

Sarah Foster, 27, said: “It meant a hell of a lot to do the ride for Jake- he was such a lovely and smiley boy. It was quite an emotional night and Anne-Marie and Ian came at the start of the race to see me off. I was talking to quite a few people on the way and when I told them why I was doing the ride they were very supportive and motivated me to carry on.”

Sarah has completed a series of charity events such as climbing Snowdon, 10k runs and a walk from the Royal Liverpool University Hospital to Whiston.

She completed the 64.4 mile ride in nine hours.

Sarah added: “It went really tough but it went well. I’ve done quite a lot for charity but when this ride came up after what happened with Jake, I knew I had to do something a bit more challenging to raise as much money as I could. I have a few aches and pains and it was the hardest challenge I have ever done, but it was well worth it.”
