TRAVELLERS who set up camp in Sherdley Park just days after pitching up in Haresfinch Park could face court action this week.

The group, who are believed to be from France, set up camp in the park on Saturday evening after being served legal papers at Haresfinch Park.

St Helens Council officers served the group a Section 77 notice on Monday, which gave them 24 hours to vacate the park.

At the time of going to press the group are still present.

A council spokesman has confirmed that it has now set a court date for later this week, where it will seek to obtain an eviction notice.

The authority will also attempt to obtain an eviction notice for a separate group of travellers currently on Pewfall Park in Haydock.

The spokesman said: “We are aware of the issue and are working through the necessary legal steps to remove the groups as soon as possible, using the powers available to us.

“A Section 77 notice was issued to the group at Sherdley Park on Monday morning, following a site visit.

“Notice has also been given to the group at Pewfall Park, and we will be monitoring the situation closely.

“If the groups fail to leave and eviction is required, the council has already organised a court hearing for later this week to secure eviction notices.”
