A POLICE officer has showed that age is just a number after chasing and arresting a man with a weapon on his last day before retirement.

Constable Alan Moore was out on patrol on Bolton Street in Fingerpost at around 2.50pm yesterday, Tuesday, June 19, when he attempted to talk to a group of men.

The group made off and Constable Moore gave chase on foot and caught a man. A police-style baton was discarded nearby and seized.

A 27-year-old man has been charged with possession of an offensive weapon, and will appear today at Liverpool, Knowsley and St Helens Magistrates Court.

St Helens Community Chief Inspector Matt Drennan said: “To outrun a suspect when in full uniform at any age is impressive, but to do it on your last day as a police officer is a brilliant way to end anyone’s service.

“We are proud to have officers in St Helens and across the force who are dedicated, enthusiastic and with serious stamina! Alan will be very much missed and we wish him well in the future.”
