A LARGE fire broke out at Rainford Industrial Estate yesterday evening, Saturday.
Firefighters were called to Sandwash Close, Rainford Industrial Estate at 6.40pm after a container carrying PVC and pallets was believed to have caught fire and spread to other areas.
Thick black smoke could be seen billowing into the skies above countryside and housing estates.
Residents reported hearing a loud bang with fears that an explosion took place.
Five fire engines and a support vehicle attended the scene and were there until around 11.30pm.

Firefighters used two main branch hoses and two high pressure hose reel jets to extinguish the flames.
A forklift truck was also sent to the estate to clear up materials such as fibre glass.
Residents were urged to keep doors and windows shut during the blaze.
People with existing medical conditions were advised to keep medicine nearby.
