A PERSON has died after being hit by a train at Rainhill station this morning.

Northern Rail say services have been suspended between Huyton and Earlestown, with all lines blocked due to the incident.

British Transport Police confirmed that there has been a fatality at the station this morning.

A spokesman said: "Our officers attended the line close to Rainhill railway station on Tuesday (May 22) at approximately 7.30am following reports that a person had been struck by a train.

"Colleagues from Merseyside Police and The North West Ambulance Service also attended, but the person was pronounced dead at the scene."

They added: "Officers are working to identify the person and inform their next of kin.

"This incident is not currently being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner."

A Merseyside Police statement said: "Please be aware we are currently assisting British Transport Police at Rainhill Railway Station following a concern for safety.

"This will cause disruptions to services, so please use another station or seek alternate travel routes."
