TWO men fled a suspected stolen car that hit a van carrying a rock band in the early hours of Saturday.

Police have confirmed a Renault Megane, which is believed to have been stolen, and a Citroen Relay van were involved in the smash on Lingholme Road, near the junction with Boundary Road and Kirkland Street.

The van, which was left on its side, was carrying the band Salander, who were on their way home from a gig shortly before 1am. A woman band member, who was a passenger in the van, was treated in hospital.

Writing on their Facebook page, Salander said: "After the TANK gig on Friday, Sue, Beanie and Matty were hit in the van by a speeding car. The impact spun and tipped the van and Sue had to be cut out by the fire brigade.

"The two lads responsible legged it after impact, police are obviously involved.

"Thankfully, everyone eventually walked away from it with some bruises and a couple of broken bones. This is the main thing; it's been a lucky escape."

Police said a woman who is in the van was taken to hospital with a fractured collarbone and other occupants of the van received minor injuries.

Sergeant Phil Davis from Matrix Roads Policing said: "We are keen to speak to anyone who witnessed this incident, and anyone in the area at the time who may have recorded the incident on their dash-cams.

"A small detail may be vital in our investigation.

"We would like to speak to those occupants of the Renault Megane who appear to have left the scene of an accident, with scant regard for the wellbeing of those in the second vehicle.

"Although injuries were sustained by occupants of the van, thankfully they weren’t even more serious and we are supporting those involved as we investigate the circumstances."

The band had been heading home from a gig at TANK when the incident happened.

They added: "I guess most of you know that we wouldn't pull out of a gig and leave anyone in the lurch willingly, so this is why we couldn't do Windle last night."

The men who fled the Megane ran off from the scene. A police spokesman confirmed that the crash is being treated as a fail to stop. The men were described as being in their 20s.

The band say they are trying to establish the extent of damage to their equipment.

They added: "As it stands, we don't know if or how much of the gear survived or is salvageable. Obviously we have gigs booked etc and we will try to sort something out; you will have to bear with us until we know the full extent of the damage and have regrouped a little.

"We have had offers of transport and gear loans from some of you lovely lot – it is really appreciated."
