THE chief executive of St Helens Council has revealed he is to undergo treatment after being diagnosed with testicular cancer.

Mike Palin, 37, informed staff at the local authority that he received the news at the weekend and he will require surgery.

It is understood Mr Palin wants to be clear about a forthcoming absence from work as he is likely to be away during next week's local elections, which will mean he is unable to act as returning officer.

Mr Palin remained in work this week at St Helens Town Hall, where he has been holding meetings with the new council leader Derek Long who has stepped into the role following Barrie Grunewald’s resignation last week.

In a statement Mr Palin said: “Over recent weeks I have had to attend a number of medical appointments for tests and consultations.

“On Tuesday last week I had a scan that confirmed the likelihood of testicular cancer.

“Following a medical consultation it has been decided the most appropriate treatment route would be surgery to remove the tumour.

"As a result, I will be absent from work for a relatively short period from some point in the next two weeks, subject to when the operation is arranged.

“This has coincided with the Local Elections and, therefore, as I may be unable to attend the election itself, I have decided to transfer my returning officer responsibility in advance.”

The elections will take place on Thursday, May 3.

“In terms of the election, the Council has a very good team in place and there will be no difference in the arrangements in place. Candidates will be contacted about the alternative returning officer arrangement.

“In terms of the Council, as the initial period of absence is likely to be a few weeks, the normal arrangements of delegating responsibilities will be in place.

"I anticipate being back in the office as soon as possible after the operation.”
