A MAN in his 30s was taken to hospital after being punched in the head in the town centre on Saturday night (April 14).
Police were called to Ormskirk Street at 11.30pm after a man had sustained bruises and cuts to his head after an "altercation".
Ambulance were also called to the scene and the victim was taken to hospital for assessment.
Police say the man is not currently assisting them with enquiries.
Officers say the attack took place near to the Imperial Bar but clarified they do not believe the bar to be connected to the incident.
Detective Inspector Louise Birchall said: "At this stage it is unclear what happened, but we believe there was some kind of altercation near to the Imperial Bar before the victim was punched to the head.
"Any kind of violence in the town centre is completely unacceptable so if you were involved, in the area and saw anything or know who was responsible, do the right thing and come forward to us or anonymously to Crimestoppers.
"We want to keep St Helens as a safe and welcoming place to work, visit and socialise so please come forward."
Police added that CCTV and witness enquiries into the incident are ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact police by calling 101 with reference number 1272 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
