PLANS to create a Shakespeare North Playhouse in Prescot are one step closer, after a construction partner has been announced to take on the multi-million pound development.

Knowsley Council’s cabinet has agreed the appointment of Kier Construction to build the new theatre, education and exhibition centre, which will be a major visitor attraction and the first of its kind in the region.

Work is set to start in April this year, with an earmarked completion date of April 2020 to coincide with William Shakespeare's birthday. The theatre will open to guests and students later that year.

As part of the contract, Kier Construction will work with Knowsley-based companies to strengthen the economy.

Meanwhile 11 new apprentices opportunities and seven jobs through Knowsley Works will be offered alongside work placement opportunities.

The development comes after an updated design was approved in November 2017, which will include a 350 seat Shakespearean theatre, education facilities, a performance studio, exhibition and education centre, office accommodation, a coffee shop and bar.

Once completed, the Shakespeare North Playhouse is expected to create 19 jobs and 203 off site permanent posts while bringing £5.3m to the Liverpool City Region and attracting approximately 111,000 visitors per year.

Cllr Andy Moorhead, leader of Knowsley Council said: “I am delighted that Kier Construction has been appointed to build the Shakespeare North Playhouse.

"This is another important milestone for the project and I am looking forward to seeing the start of construction.

“I am proud to lead this council in bringing such rich cultural and educational experiences to our residents and the wider community.

"It is a really exciting time for Prescot, Knowsley and the Liverpool City Region."

John O’Callaghan, Kier Construction Northern managing director, added: “We’re excited to be delivering this fantastic scheme for Knowsley Council which builds on our success in the arts and leisure sector, including the recently completed refurbishment and redevelopment of Chester Storyhouse.

“Sitting in the heart of the town, Shakespeare North Playhouse will be a real asset to the community when complete and we’re looking forward to working with the local supply chain to deliver this project and develop the skills of local people with the creation of 11 new apprenticeships.”
