A MAN who was found with head injuries in the town centre at 5am on Sunday morning had suffered a fall, say police.

The man, aged in his 20s, was discovered on Hall Street, St Helens, shortly after 5am.

Police started an investigation yesterday after it was initially unclear if he fell or was assaulted.

He was taken to hospital for treatment for his injuries, which at this stage are not believed to be life threatening.

Police had been checking CCTV to track his movements and this afternoon a police spokesman said: "An investigation has concluded that the male was injured as a result of an accidental fall and as such officers are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident."

Two police cars were stationed near to the entrance of the Hardshaw Centre.

An area of pavement was sealed off with a green tarpaulin on the ground.

Detective Inspector Richie Jones said: “Officers on patrol found the male on the pavement.

"At this stage it is not clear whether the man’s injuries are as a result of a fall or an assault.

“CCTV enquiries are ongoing in the local area and I would appeal to anyone who may have information to contact officers as soon as possible.”
