A FIRST World War photograph dated 1915 that featured in last week’s Star attracted a lot of interest from readers.

Alan Robert Shaw, from Thatto Heath, shared the picture which includes his granddad William Robert Shaw (top right). He is keen to find relatives of the other men in the picture and wants them to get in touch with us at the Star.

Details on the back of the photograph say: From top left, Harold Burns, from Burnley – killed; J Healm, from St Helens – killed; bottom, B Ringer, from Rochdale – killed; and J Conway, from Manchester – shell shocked.

Pat Harris got in touch via email to say: “My husband’s granddad was John William Helm. Could it be him?

“He was killed at the Somme.”

The St Helens Rolls of Honour website’s Dave Whitmore also got in touch.

He said: “We have tried to find the St Helens man J Healm, but we have nobody with that surname in our database.

“We do however have First World War casualty Private 5921 John William Helm, who seems to resemble the man in your picture. We suspect his name may have been recorded wrong.

“If you can find out whether the men in the picture were of the Lancashire Fusiliers 11th Battalion, this might help to solve your puzzle.”
