THE organisers of the Spooky Welly Walk set to hit Sherdley park this Saturday have issued an SOS call after their gazebo was destroyed by Storm Brian in the Liverpool version of the event.

Thousands are expected to take part in the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation Spooky Welly Walk.

A key element of the Hallowe’en-themed event is the Storytelling Space, where families gather to hear suitably spooky tales.

But Saturday’s visit by Storm Brian has left the charity searching for a new tent.

The wind and rain that ripped through Sefton Park brought an early finish to the Liverpool version of the Welly Walk. with stalls and open-air activities being battered by heavy gusts.

Organisers were finally forced to call it a day around 4.30pm on safety grounds.

But the story-telling tent and Registration tent took the full force of the furious storm, which left supporting poles twisted out of shape and the structures no longer usable.

Now the charity is desperately seeking replacements in time for the St Helens event on Saturday.

Jenny Snell, head of fundraising with Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation, said: “We’re really looking forward to our big day in Sherdley Park. But we’re stuck without a suitable tent or gazebo for our Spooky Storytelling sessions and Registration.

“So is there anyone out there who can help? We’re looking for a properly enclosed tent, about 12 metres by 8 metres and one that us 6 metres x 4 metres.

“Last Saturday was amazing, despite the weather. We had a fantastic day in Sefton Park. We were thrilled so many people turned out to support us. As ever, when the chips are down, Merseyside shows its great big heart. We’ve been touched by how many people have taken the time and trouble to let us know how much they enjoyed themselves.

“It was brilliant seeing all the great costumes and so many happy faces. We’re looking forward to doing it again this weekend in St Helens, which is why we really need to find a new tent or gazebo. We want everyone coming to Sherdley Park to have a great time. So please, can someone help us Save Our Spooky?”

Around 3,000 are expected on Saturday. And no matter what, the charity promises plenty of ghoulishly gigglesome events to scare your socks off.

People can pose for pictures in the pumpkin patch or Dr Frankenstein’s Laboratory, or race ferrets and meet owls in the Animal Area, or take a spin on one of the rides in the mini-fairground.

Or they can chance their arm to scoop a prize in the infamous Yucky Dip and dare you delve into a bucket of goblin guts or rummage for a winning spider or a bat without waking the pack of sleeping werewolves.

When legs get weary, have fun with the team from Water Babies, or get a little messy with the Mucky Monkeys.

If it rains, people can have a bounce and a dance in the undercover Disco Dome or show your creative side with some creepy crafts.

Jenny added: “No matter what the weather, families know we offer a wide range of activities to keep everyone amused. And of course, money raised will help our efforts to beat Britain’s biggest cancer killer, which we will only do by working together.”
