UP to 50 jobs have been created across a range of roles as a company aiming to tackle food waste gets set to open its new superstore in the borough.

Company Shop, which is one of the UK’s largest redistributors of surplus products, is opening its new central hub in Sutton Fold, where it aims to work with brands to help them reduce waste products.

The job roles include managers, supervisors and retail assistant positions, both full and part time positions at its membership store – which will open in January – for people that work in food manufacturing and the emergency services.

The firm promises that members will be able to access food at approximately a third of normal retail prices, helping them to stretch their budgets.

Bosses also plan to open up to five community shops across the North West in the next two to three years which would create a further 10 jobs.

The Community Shops will be smaller but work on the same model in areas of the highest need.

Membership for these will be open to people who live in the community and receive welfare support.

Founder and chairman of Company Shop and Community Shop, John Marren, said: “We were overwhelmed by the support from the food industry and politicians at our food summit this week.

“We have always been motivated to be different and to make a difference and we are excited to bring our model to the Liverpool City Region.

“Working with manufacturers and retailers we are gearing up to step up to the two big challenges of food waste and food poverty across the North West.”
