THIS is the car involved in a high-speed police chase which resulted in a crash in St Helens town centre this morning.

Police vehicles were seen in pursuit in the town centre shortly after 10am this morning.

At around 10.10am a police vehicle travelling on Rainford Road in the direction of St Helens was involved in a pursuit of a green Vauxhall Corsa, which had been stolen.

Witnesses saw several police cars in pursuit of the Corsa in the town centre, with one onlooker describing it as "like the Dukes of Hazzard".

A short time later, the Corsa was involved in a collision with a grey Mercedes car on North John Street. 

Police say the man driver of the Mercedes was assessed by paramedics at the scene but was not injured.

The two occupants of the Corsa were also assessed by paramedics but refused further treatment.

A 20-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of burglary, unauthorised taking of a motor vehicle and drug driving.

A 31-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of allowing herself to be carried in a stolen vehicle.

They have been taken to a police station to be interviewed.

The Mercedes was seen being taken away on North John Street and ambulance and police were at the scene.

Witnesses described hearing a "loud bang" on North John Street.
