AIDAN McAteer has had more time added onto his sentence for his part in claiming the life of four-year-old Violet-Grace Youens - after he posted pictures on social media from prison.

The Ministry of Justice has confirmed that the 24-year-old, who posted an image of a birthday card apparently given to him by his fellow inmates in HMP Liverpool, received “additional time” after an investigation was carried out by the prison.

The picture, posted to Instagram last month and now removed, was of a card that read “HMP Birthday Boy,” which was liked more than 200 times.

The Ministry of Justice would not reveal how much time was added to McAteer's sentence.

However, it confirmed that an investigation was carried out by the prison and that McAteer received additional time following an adjudication.

The MoJ has said it is a criminal offence to bring a mobile phone into prison, or transmit sounds or images from within a prison using a mobile phone. These offences carry a maximum penalty of two years in prison.

The MoJ says it is stepping up measures to find and block illegal mobile phones, including a £2million investment in detection wands and legislation to block phones from being used in prisons.

Last week his co-accused Dean Brennan, 27, posted a picture of himself and his fellow inmates on Snapchat with the caption ‘Jail life.’

This is now being looked into by the Ministry of Justice.

Violet-Grace’s parents Glenn and Becky Youens said: "We are already disappointed with the justice system in the UK.

“The fact a prison sentence is automatically halved is appalling. How can any victim of crime really get any sort of justice?

“They will serve less time behind bars than what Violet was alive on this earth.

"She has not had the opportunity to start primary school as she should have last week, let alone finish it.

“The only slight justice we were supposed to have as a family is that they are currently behind bars, however, it looks to us and everyone else, they are having a brilliant time in prison.

“Three meals a day, an education and partying in their cells with their friends, even having the audacity to post images from inside their prison cells, just to rub in further that they are not receiving any punishment for being child killers, amongst other things.

“This is disgusting and such disrespectful behaviour.

“How can these individuals really be reformed in prison and learn how to conform to the laws of the country, and effectively contribute to society?

“Less than six months into 'prison life' and they are brazenly disregarding the rules and bragging.

“The prison system is too soft on individuals such as these and that is why they are more than likely to reoffend when they come out. Brennan only came out of prison for a different offence in December 2016.

“We hope one day they actually see themselves for what they are; evil child killers, and show at least some remorse and sorrow.

“We call upon prime minister Theresa May, to reform sentencing guidelines for individuals who kill a child.

“How is this justice for Violet, our family and her little friends? We as a family have a life sentence.”

McAteer, from Prescot, was jailed for nine years and four months for causing the death of four-year-old Violet-Grace Youens by driving dangerously.

Brennan, from Whiston, who was a passenger in the stolen vehicle, was jailed for six years and eight months for aggravated vehicle taking and assisting an offender.
