TWO high school students scored an interview with Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham at the reopening of WA12 radio station.

Rainhill High head boy Owen Adams and deputy head boy Jamie Lavin, from year 11, spoke to former Newton-le-Willows schoolboy Mr Burnham live on air – despite only having 20 minutes to prepare.

Andy was there to unveil the new station of September 6 and the two boys quizzed him on about his new role as mayor, the Manchester attacks and his Hillsborough appeal, as well as asking if he would join their fantasy football league.

Owen said: “It was completely unexpected! We only found out that it was Andy Burnham when he arrived with the massive pair of scissors.

“Jamie and I were just enjoying the event when we were asked to compose the interview.

“We were both honoured to be asked over all the other presenters to be there too. We only had less than twenty minutes to prepare.

“On air and off air, Andy was such a humble and genuinely nice guy. Within his answers, he came across as very professional, and he was a good sport with whatever we threw at him.

“He was brilliant at responding to our jokes with good humour, and the energy was positive.

“After the interview, he promised to come back on the show for a longer interview, so I can’t wait to have him back on.”
