A COMMUNITY has expressed its sadness after a woman in her 70s was killed in a collision with a heavy goods vehicle.

The woman died after she was hit by a lorry on Church Road in Rainford near the Eagle and Child pub. 

The lorry involved is believed to have been stopped in Haydock on the East Lancashire Road between Millfield Lane and Haydock Lane, near to the Asda collection point.

Rainford councillor Allan Jones said: "Our hearts and our thoughts are with the lady's family and friends at this very sad time.

"We are really shocked by this and very upset."

Star readers also reacted with sadness on social media to news of the "horrific" incident.

One said: "(It happened) right in front of my work. What an absolute tragedy.

"My prayers and condolences to the family."

Flowers have been placed close to the scene with one message simply reading: "So very, very sorry."

Sara Birchall wrote on Facebook: "A very sad day, the whole village is deeply saddened. Love and thoughts for her family".

Doreene Kay added: "So heartbreaking, love thoughts and prayers go out to the lady and her family xx".

And Tracey Anne Cath Stevenson wrote: "God bless her and her poor family".

Police are appealing for witnesses and their investigation into the incident is ongoing.
