AROUND 250 people turned out in support of the Great Get Together event in memory of MP Jo Cox at Victoria Park on Saturday.

The Victorian Picnic, which aimed to get families to picnic in the park, included face painting, Victorian cake decorating and free yoga demonstrations.

This was one of hundreds of events across the country in memory of the Batley and Spen MP who died on June 16 last year after being stabbed and shot.

Her husband Brendan spoke out ahead of the anniversary asking for communities to come together to celebrate the life of the 41-year-old mum-of-two, proving her quote “that there is more that unites us than divides us.”

Live music from Greenall’s band provided the entertainment, while members of the Friends of Victoria Park group wore Victorian style clothing, despite the scorching heat.

Councillors and MPs also dropped by with Marie Rimmer and Conor McGinn coming along to show their support alongside leader of the St Helens Green Party David O'Keeffe and Windle ward councillors, Cllr Gill Neal and Cllr David Baines.

A guest book was also available to sign.

Ann Shacklady-Smith, one of the event organisers said: "We had superb weather, which tempted families out into the park with their picnics.

“Thank you to everyone who supported this event, may the sentiment of Jo’s quote continue.”
