KAREN and Paul Ledsham have more than one reason to celebrate after renewing their vows while on a trip to Jamaica and learning they have been accepted to be future foster parents.

Karen and Paul from Haydock – who lost both their children, Harrison and Abigail, to illness – headed out to the luxury break after audiences watched their story on Children in Need as part of a campaign to raise awareness of the work at Claire House Children’s Hospice.

The heartbreaking film told viewers how Abigail died shortly before her second birthday in 2008 from Sandhoffs Disease and 12-year-old Harrison died of bone cancer in May 2015.

After it aired, travel agent Kelly More, from York, set up a JustGiving page to send them on their dream holiday, and a place on Harrison's bucket list.

Such was the response from the public, £8,000 was raised to send them to the Carribean.

The trip also marked their son’s two year ‘angelversary’, (he died on May 14 2015) which they celebrated by visiting the house of his idol Bob Marley before renewing their vows on a beach the next day.

They also lit a lantern in memory of Harrison on the beach.

Karen, 44 said: “We can’t thank everybody enough for their kind donations, a holiday doesn’t bring Harrison or Abigail back but it restored our faith in the goodness of others and made a horrible time a little easier.

“We decided to go for Harrison’s angelversary because we know from experience that it is easier if we are doing something the anniversary of their deaths.

“We always wanted to renew our vows when we reached 25 years, but with everything we have been through we wanted to do it this year and just have the two of us, well we like to think the four of us.

“It was lovely and I had a yellow bouquet because Harrison loved yellow flowers.

“Plus we have just been approved to be foster carers so it fell nicely as we celebrated that as well.

“It was something we wanted to do but also something Harrison had asked us to do.

“After Abigail died he said we have lots of things and it would be nice to help others who need it, he was very thoughtful. So we know we would have his blessing.”

The Ledshams stayed in a five-star all-inclusive adult only trip, where they swam with dolphins, visited Bob Marley’s hometown, and went on a catamaran named Cool Runnings, named after one of Harrisons favourite films.

Karen added: “We just want to thank Kelly and everyone who donated.

“We can’t thank her enough, we have a friend for life with Kelly now and we couldn’t believe that so many people were touched by Harrison and Abigail’s story.

“It shows you how kind people can be.”
