FANCY a vintage bus ride into Warrington for £1.50? Well keep an eye out because for a limited time only a new bus route is offering their budget service in an original 1960s double-decker.

Link Network, which has a depot based in Parr, currently offers services connecting Widnes and Warrington.

But after identifying the need for a “budget route” to Warrington from the town centre, the company is rolling out a new service.

The 329 route, which will venture from St Helens Bus Station to Parr then Burtonwood and Warrington, was launched on Monday, May 22 and will cost residents £1.50.

To celebrate the launch, the firm’s director, Mike Mason has used his connections with the North West Transport Museum to offer the route on the 1967 model, which served the St Helens community until 1980.

Mike, 40 from Warrington, said: “I have family and friends who often travel between the towns and they have said it is really expensive, so I wanted to start an affordable route between both.

“We wanted to offer an effective service but to celebrate we are going to use a Leyland PD2, the last to be bought in by St Helens Corporation which hasn’t seen daylight for 37 years for this route.

“It’s only just been fully restored to its former glory .

“We had a first run the other Monday and our older customers in particular loved it. Many remembered the busses and were very nostalgic.

“Some even said they may have been on that very bus.”
The first bus from St Helens Bus Station is currently 8.13am with the last being 4.21pm but the service will soon offer a 7.30am bus for business commuters.
