MOTORISTS are warned of congestion stretching back to Rainhill this morning aftr a crash on the M62 this morning.

The motorway is closed eastbound  between junction 9 for Winwick and junction 10 for the Croft Interchange after a crash involving two lorries.

It is expected to be shut for several hours.

An air ambulance landed in a field close to the carriageway and three fire engines are on the scene where one driver is trapped inside the cab of their lorry.

Paramedics are currently checking the driver's condition before firefighters begin working to get the casualty out of the vehicle.

The accident happened at around 8.45am and the entire carriageway was closed at 9am.

A diversion is in place and police are asking motorists to leave the M62 at junction 9.

They can then follow the solid triangle signs which will take them on to Winwick Road, A49, towards the M6 southbound at junction 22.

Drivers can then exit the M6 at junction 21A and re-join the M62 at junction 10.

Traffic on the M62 is queuing back to junction 8 for Burtonwood Road and motorists have been asked to avoid the area.

Highways England officers from Newton-le-Willows are on the scene helping drivers.

The westbound carriageway was closed for the air ambulance to land but it has now reopened.
