SIX fire engines were called to put out a blaze that engulfed a church.
The altar of Our Lady Help of Christians Church on Portico Lane, Portico was severely damaged by the fire, which is believed to have been started accidentally
The remainder of the property, and living quarters at the church, sustained smoke damage.
A man was given oxygen at the scene but after being assessed by paramedics did not require further treatment.
Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service received a call at 4.20pm and remained on scene for 45 minutes.
