RESIDENTS are reminded that today is the last chance to register to vote in June's general election, if they have not yet done so.
The deadline to register to vote in person at a polling station is at midnight tonight (Monday, May 22).
St Helens Council is reminding people that applying to pay council tax does not mean you are added to the electoral register too.
Research indicates recent home movers in particular are less likely to be registered.
Those already registered in previous elections do not need to again.
A council spokesman said 700 new applications came in this morning, out of which 400 were already registered.
Around 137,000 residents in the borough are registered to vote.
Anyone who has not registered to vote at their current address can register online at www.gov.uk/registertovote
Any residents unsure if they are registered can call 01744 676464 to check before registering.
Meanwhile, those unable to vote in person on June 8, you can apply for a postal or proxy vote.
The deadline to apply for voting by post is 5pm tomorrow (Tuesday, May 23).
The deadline to apply to vote by proxy at the general election is 5pm on Wednesday next week (May 31).
