THERE will be one bank open in St Helens town centre for this holiday Monday - but it will be one with a difference.

'The People's Bank of St Helens' is a project brought by the Heart of Glass which will offer a series of art workshops throughout this upcoming May Day.

And at the end of the day the 'bank' will be transformed into a cinema for people to watch award-winning Ken Loach film I Daniel Blake.

Artist Michelle Wren, from Rainford, who is involved in the project, said: “We are opening an alternative bank, the bank of St Helens.

"But the only profit this bank hopes to make is in building community, inspiring positive action and having fun doing."

In honour of the Chicago workers, who fought for an eight-hour working day, the bank will be open between 9am and 5pm on May 1 at the former O2 shop at 12 Church Street.

“Come and open a High Interest Account and get involved in a series of free art workshops and creative actions that bring inspiration from all over the world to St Helens," added Michelle.

"This is a great way to spend your bank holiday with your kids, friends or family or come alone and meet lots of great people from our town.”

After the working day, the bank will become a cinema with the film to be screened from 6pm.

All activities are free, including the film, and open to everyone.

Artists involved in this project include Michelle Wren, Ruth Dyer, Claire Weetman, Helen Oxley, Catherin Mugonyi and Kerry Morrison.
