A DRIVER was taken to hospital by ambulance after a collision on the Rainford Bypass.

The incident, which happened outside Rainford Golf Course, was reported to police at around 3.20pm on Tuesday.

The car, a Nissan Micra, had been travelling towards Windle Island, when it crashed into a lamppost.

A spokesman for Merseyside Police, who confirmed the car had turned on to its roof, said: "It involved one vehicle that appears to have collided with a lamppost.

"The bypass was closed in one direction but is now open in both directions, but with one lane still closed."

The spokesman said North West Ambulance Service were also on the scene and that the female driver was taken to hospital with injuries that were not believed to be serious.

He added: "Drivers may face some congestion due to the lane closure."
