SAINTS players Luke Thompson and Dominique Peyroux were among a group of more than 100 who put on their walking shoes in aid of autism awareness.

Taylor Park hosted a sponsored walk event for World Autism Awareness Day, which saw participants complete a 5k trek.

Autism affects 1.4 per cent of the population although campaigners believe the real figure to be higher. People on the autism spectrum are affected in different ways with some able to live 'everyday' lives, while others require a lifetime of help.

Sufferers struggle with social interaction and socialising, along with unwritten social rules.

Mayor and mayoress Cllrs Dave and Jeanette Banks were also in attendance on the day, which also saw a 'Ponts' Autism friendly children's fairground held, with information stalls and food and drink available.

Organised by the Autism and Asperger's Society, the day is believed to have raised at least £3,000 as walkers made the most of the spring sunshine to ensure a successful day.

"It was a great day and we have been asked to do it again next year and we will try and make it an annual event," said Trevor Adams, secretary of the society, which has moved into new premises on Hall Street.

"The awareness was fantastic and hopefully we can build on that and highlight autism."

Society chairperson Mary Guilfoyle added: "It was a good day. We'd like to thank all of the stallholders and also Neil Ponts for the fairground."
