A MAN involved in the hit-and-run on Prescot Road, which resulted in the death a four-year-old girl, is believed to be out of the country, say police.

The incident has so far resulted in the arrests of two men, a 27-year-old and a 23-year-old, with officers seeking a third, another 23-year-old shown in CCTV images wearing blue, who is thought to have fled within hours.

Speaking to the Star, Detective Chief Inspector Chris Sephton from St Helens Police, said: “We are fairly certain we know who this man is and within three hours he was leaving the country, and we believe he is still out of the country.

“We want him to search his conscience and think of the devastation of this family and to do the right thing and contact police and say what happened on Friday afternoon, ASAP.

“We will leave no stone unturned and we ask his family and friends to search their conscience as well, because a four-year-old child died on Saturday and they should put themselves in their (the family’s) place.

"We have been in contact with the authorities of the country where we believe he is.

“We are not releasing that information at the present time but we are doing everything we can to try and identify where he is now and get him back over here.”

A 27-year-old man today, Monday, March 27, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous and arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

A 23-year-old man was arrested yesterday, Sunday and has been released pending further enquires.

DCI Sephton added: “The vehicle itself had two people inside, a third male was dropped off earlier in the town centre and that is the 23-year-old man who was arrested (yesterday).

“The vehicle, which was stolen, was heading out of St Helens at speed and had just activated a camera, which alerted police it was in the area.

“It was being driven erratically and sped up Borough Road and Prescot Road.

“Around 150 yards up, we now know that Violet and her nan were about to cross the road and the vehicle collided with them.

“We urge anyone with information or who saw anything, even if they think it is trivial, to come forward.
