POLICE arrested six people and issued three search warrants as part of a week of action in the town centre to tackle drug related crime.

The week of action earlier this month took place to target some of the issues affecting the public and businesses that operate within the town centre.

The six arrests included offences such as theft, drugs offences and recall to prison, whereas the three search warrants included two specifically targeting the supply of Class A drugs.

Superintendent Louise Harrison said: "Plain clothes officers patrolled the Church Square area and officers visited licenced premises and locations in the town centre known to have been subject to crime and ASB.

"Those involved in drug supply don’t care about the impact drugs have on our streets, but as a force we recognise the harm that drug-related crime can have.

“The force proactively tackles drug crimes at various levels on a daily basis – whether that be removing cannabis farms from our streets, executing warrants to tackle the wholesale supply and distribution of controlled drugs to remove Class A drugs and put offenders before the courts, to making stops on the streets to remove smaller amounts of drugs.”

This statement was issued following report of a doorman of 12 years saying he has seen drug use and anti-social behaviour being a bigger problem in the past year.
