PLANS to erect an energy recovery facility capable of producing 15MW of electricity have been unanimously approved by councillors at a planning meeting tonight, Tuesday.

Glass bosses Pilks’ submitted the application for the erection of a facility at their Greengate site on Sherdley Road. It will create up to 20 jobs on completion.

The application proposes to generate enough power to supply both Pilks’ sites at Greengate and Watson Street, with surplus being given over to the national grid.

The development will take place on land that currently houses an administration building, car park and security building, which will be demolished and replaced with a 36 meter building with a chimney stack of up to 60 metres, and a multi-storey carpark.

The offices and security building would also be replaced but within the existing Greengate works.
