MORE than 200 tonnes of sand and silt has been excavated from a brook thanks to a £15,000 investment to reduce the flood risk to the community.

The Environment Agency, which carried out the work, increasing capacity in the Windle and Hardshaw Brook in Queens Park.

The excavated sand and silt was stacked on site to dry out before being removed by a contractor, ensuring it was recycled and did not go to landfill.

However, work overran due to bad weather conditions.

Karen Glasgow, Environment Agency operations manager, said: “Our Operations Team has been working hard to reduce flood risk.

"This project benefits more than 77 properties in the immediate vicinity and far more in the wider St Helens area and I’d like to thank residents for their understanding during the completion of the work. 

"The Environment Agency continues to work with communities and invest in reducing flood risk. We also continue to encourage residents to check their flood risk online and sign up for our free flood warnings."
