WE all need good health and wellbeing to enjoy and get the most from life. It is something that we can take for granted until we're ill.

Women's health has improved over recent years and a girl born today can expect to live 81 years. Women are also less likely than men to die young from a variety of causes, have lower suicide rates and are and more likely to use health services.

There are some areas however where the health and wellbeing of women are significantly worse in St Helens than the national average.

Many people enjoy a drink but too much alcohol can result in significant harm. In the number of women dying as a result of alcohol harm is twice the national rate. Even drinking a bit too much over time can increase risks of being overweight, high blood pressure, heart disease and cancer.

Most families have really strong support from partners, extended families and the local community.

However not all women experience these positive relationships.

Domestic abuse is a significant issue in St Helens and women can sometimes suffer in silence for many years before coming forward. This can sometimes lead to depression, drinking more alcohol and not being able to care for their children.

How can we support families who are going through difficult times? We all have a role to play. Footsteps provide support for people who are affected by drug or alcohol use by a family member. Although men in St Helens are more active than the national average, women in St Helens are much less active than nationally.

Only one in six women in St Helens are active enough to keep themselves well. The popular couch-to-5k programmes in St Helens have helped hundreds of women to get fit, look good and feel great. Being a healthy weight is not just about looking good it is about feeling great in yourself.

Being active releases endorphins in your body which puts you in a good mood. Sports clubs are another great way of meeting people and enjoying being active. The Thatto Heath ladies rugby club are the proud holders of the ladies European cup.

We Can - the St Helens Star and council women’s wellbeing campaign - over the last few months has featured inspirational stories of local women who have overcome different challenges.

Over the coming months we will take a closer look at the issues for women and what is being done by local people. We can make a difference so that everyone can enjoy the good health and wellbeing that most of us do.
