PARTS of the town centre, including major traffic lights, have been affected by a power cut this afternoon linked to construction work at West Point.

Areas affected include Church Square Shopping Centre which has been closed off to the public, Costa Coffee on Church Street and other businesses around the area.

Bridge Street, the Range shopping centre and traffic lights on Chalon Way are also among those affected.

A council spokesman said:“Due to a power outage believed to be linked to ongoing construction work at Linkway West, power has been lost to traffic lights at the junction of Chalon Way West and Linkway West A58. We advise motorists to avoid the area.

“The outage has also affected some town centre businesses, including Church Square Shopping Centre, which is now temporarily closed to the public for safety reasons.

“Residents wanting to use car parking facilities are advised to avoid Chalon Way, Tontine and St Mary’s car parks and to use alternatives, such as Birchley Street.

“Scottish Power is responding to the situation, which we believe will be resolved in the next couple of hours before the peak traffic period.”
