A WOMAN who was taken to hospital following an accident on the M62 where her car came off the carriageway and hit a tree is in a "criticial condition", say police.


Police have issued a re-appeal for information on the incident which happened at around 6.50am today, Wednesday involving the woman's black Vauxhall Corsa when it hit a tree.


The female driver has been taken to Aintree hospital where her condition is described as critical after being found unconscious at the scene.

Police are appealing for information on the incident which happened at around 6.50am today, Wednesday involving the woman's black Vauxhall Corsa when it hit a tree.

The female driver has been taken to Aintree hospital where her condition is described as serious after being found unconscious at the scene.

The motorway was closed westbound, between junction eight at Burtonwood and junction seven at Rainhill Stoops, throughout the day while collision investigators were in attendance but reopened at 3pm.

MOTORISTS are caught in a series of tailbacks this morning after two motorway accidents.

The M62 is closed and there is heavy traffic due to an accident Westbound between J8 Burtonwood Road and J7 A57 Warrington Road at Rainhill Stoops.

And there are is also one lane closed and queueing traffic due to accident on M6 Southbound between Newton-le-Willows and J21A M62 (Croft Interchange).

The M62 is likely to be closed until lunchtime after a 'serious' crash this morning.

An ambulance and three rapid response teams were called to the scene at 7.05am after a car came off the westbound carriageway and hit a tree.

One woman has been taken to Aintree Hospital after she was found unconscious at the scene, between junction eight at Burtonwood and junction seven at Rainhill.

Highways England closed the whole westbound carriageway between junction nine and junction seven at 8.30am, with queues stretching back to junction 10 at Croft.

The closure is to allow investigations to take place and are police are urging drivers to avoid the area.

A diversion has been set up, taking motorists on to Burtonwood Road, Whittle Avenue and the A57 before rejoining the M62 at junction seven.
